Researching the color red a lot lately. Basically, I'm in love with cochineal, the little bug that when dried & ground up, gives off a bright red color full of carminic acid. Its history even includes pirates stealing cargo to obtain it!

Darling c1955 bathing suit by Carolyn Schnurer. Made for her "Destination Norway" collection, the cotton fabric used is reminiscent of a Norwegian geometric tapestry. Dreaming of warm days, frolicking poolside with a cold drink!

A beautiful sleeve detail captured by
#Ingres in his painting of a young woman in 1805, the informal pose of the arm caught up in the mamaluke style of sleeve. An existing example@NGVMelbourne shows similar ripples of muslin that descend from the shoulder. Painting@HullFerenspic.twitter.com/Rm1wEKzcYJ

In spite of being a formal portrait in which the sitter, Elizabeth de la Vallée de la Roche, portrays not only her virtues but also her family status, this is also an astonishing fashion snapshot. Look at the different types of fabrics and ribbons but most of all the...

One of my favorites - the robe à la française! This example is void of superfluous trimmings and the basic ruffles are the same bright canary as the rest of the dress. Stunning example of c1760 fashion. Bright, airy, and refreshing!

c1819 cotton dress with wool shawl for warmth. Empress Josephine popularized imported Kashmiri shawls, but one such as this was most likely a European reproduction. A lovely yet muted palette, mixing lightweight cotton & a soft paisley motif wrap

I should know this but I don't (could be a series ...): C18th fly braid (floss fringe?) usually matches the gown. Does someone know how this worked? Was the fringemaker supplied with silk by the weaver? Image: detail from

One of the details I love about Pre-Raphaelite paintings, especially Millais', is that you can see the grease and flatness of the unwashed hair that was really common. It's not flyaway; when washed with harsh soaps, it's frizzy. The Violet's Message, 1854pic.twitter.com/FqLrUdAs4o

Even the women of the Pre-Raphaelite group - more arguably the original hippies - didn't walk around with their hair lolloping about during the day. Jane Morris, the undisputed Romantic Hair Queen of the 19th century, contained her hair in everyday life.pic.twitter.com/i96Bb0Vfd3

This festive skating scene from the early-1820s depicts young men showing off on the ice in their tail coat & pantaloons (right), frock coat & trousers (left), and sleek top hats. Ladies look on in their pelisse coats, one in winter cap & swinging a reticule bag.
