these are welsh players. they represent wales and have every right to claim the welsh nationality as their own

It’s reinforcing the concept not being allowed to be part of a nation or claim identity unless you can trace 600 years of family living in the country. Sports are great for a collective identity (similarly taking the knee) but instead we should treat players as not truely Welsh??

yeah, very uncomfortable stuff. you can consider yourself welsh without ancestry and/or having being born in wales, too!

Fucking hell. As well as problematic af this just seems out of step. Depends where you go and who you speak to ofc but I’ve generally found being English-presenting/English-but-with-a-great-affinity-for-Wales while in the motherland absolutely hilarious.

This is a country that wont let my brother work as a civil engineer in the public sector because he doesn't speak welsh.

Mad how i still see people giving it large about the guardian being “the left wing paper” when they print stuff like this. These lads choose to be Welsh, that’s Welsh enough for me.

If they're being assimilated, then they're Welsh. If they're playing for Wales, they're Welsh. There's no way they aren't Welsh, no matter how you cut it
