One our team goals is to "build reliable systems so we can go vacation without a laptop". Any super thoughtful ideas on how to measure engineering team health and happiness? I'm knowingly wading into a complex topic here. Let's brainstorm together and debate.

There's nothing quite like the magic of a small team, perfectly aligned in accomplishing the slightly impossible. It is electrifying, inspiring, and surprising every time. Don't take this magic for granted if you're on such a team today. It is very rare—most never experience it

I love the clarity, brevity, and simplicity of this memo about the design of the Alto's OS: . What are similarly good examples of clear architectural writing for ambitious technical systems?

One interesting question to ask is, what companies are a proxy index of a key market shift or trend? Examples: is ~ an index of internet commerce. Owning Stripe stock means owning a basket of the Internet is ~ an index of crypto What are others?

Super interesting cognitive bias from Kanneman's work: When all the options are good, people are risk-averse. When all the options are bad, people are **risk-seeking**. It's when people are backed into tough situations that so much value ends up being created (pivots, etc.)

When friends are doubting their career choices & pondering making a switch (esp during bouts of insecurity), this is what I tell 'em: "You're smart enough not to be defined by your job title. You'd be great in most career paths you pursue. You just have to decide what you want."

At the holiday party, I wanted the team to remember 3 things to close the year: 1. Determination breeds determinism. 2. Companies are more about the people than just about anything else. 3. The journey is the reward. Happy New Year!

Bit of startup advice which I rarely hear: Spend the money on a nice office. Be frugal on just about everything else, but get a nice office. It's hard to appreciate just how much your office becomes a representation of your company. Plus, you're going to spend 10k+ hrs in it.

Do infra teams in your org have a dedicated PM? Do they have a roadmap? How do they decide what to work on?

I think there’s an opportunity for a e-reading product with moodtracks and sound effects programmed by the author/publisher. So a Kindle + speakers for a fuller, more immersive reading experience.

I know founders that work a ton because they love it. Some that don’t have to work a ton because their idea is so damn good. Some that work a ton because their business is operationally intensive. And some that worked long hours but the idea didn't work. There is *no* playbook.

Simple truth: your biggest strength is usually also your biggest weakness. Don’t fool yourself. Moving fast is not purely good, for example. It’s one reason to hire for strengths rather than lack of weakness. Lack of weakness usually means lack of strength.

The best companies demonstrate micro chaos and macro structure. Micro chaos (resembling anarchy) allows the interesting ideas to survive, and ultimately the best ideas to win. Macro structure offers predictability, accountability, and debuggability.
