The Dolly essay is a melding of some of my favorite things: theory, methods, discourse, and narrative. Theory was very useful when I was teasing out the diversity canard that informs this sentence:pic.twitter.com/G5Wv8pUvJt

If you keep up with the ASA sociological theory journal (heh), this might remind you of a paper from @victorerikray & @louise_seamster on race and diversity as an Enlightenment teleologypic.twitter.com/DVAHwD5Zxc

We love this idea of ourselves. It is useful to love this idea of ourselves because it is compatible with (and inextricably bound to) what consumption demands: if it is not a commodity then it cannot become an ideology

I think we'll do a light theory week in a few weeks in an open discussion thread. I would love it if some of my favorite theorists joined in.https://tressie.substack.com/p/the-dolly-moment …

One of the things that motivated me to go this route is that I wanted to have an open course, for all of the people who want to do this kind of reading & dishing, in community and about very accessible examples from our shared everyday lives. So, we'll get on that.

This is some powerful writing. "America’s soul is immune to everyday evidence of its fallibility, and outright antagonistic to any suggestion that it is more myth than manifest destiny."

How Parton subverted “the cultural traps which would limit her—men, marriage, and motherhood” reminded me of @InnuendoStudios’s analysis of each trope of the action heroine, and how Mad Max: Fury Road winds a careful route through each to something more.https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJA_jUddXvY7EjlefWLnxCzLbBHU4Dz6R …
