I was once praised in an evaluation for being “incredibly organized for a single mom.” I was not a single mom.

What did you say???? So hard to know what to say in these moments...

In an annual evaluation I was described as “not being afraid to state my opinion.”

Someone once commented in a job interview at a major R1 that one of my recommenders mentioned I was a good cook. I almost lost it.

So triggering. Hearing or reading any of these "positive" comments about normative femme/female-coded behaviors, even when said about other women, brings images of physical violence to mind. The thought balloon is scary. It takes a large effort to tamp it down and not react.

I had a very senior administrator at my current uni call me "uppity" (WTF) and he yelled at my chair to "reign her in"... because I had published a # of papers in 1 yr and I asked my Chair if I would thus be eligible for a raise (Uni had $ for raises that yr). Admin=long gone
-
FWIW my chair was super supportive and was shocked.
