Kickstarter’s Make/100 campaign encourages creators to make 100 copies of something as a low-level, no hassle entry into something. I want to make it clear: I’m producing 100 copies of Card Rails for US backers only (plus a few extras for me & playtesters). That’s it.

Now, I know this is counterintuitive, right? I know the entire point of making something like this is to make money. But for me, it’s not. For me it’s about: 1) following KS guidelines 2) creating an easy entry into something new Remember, I’ve never made a non-RPG KS before.

I am anticipating the 100 copies of Card Rails to sell out quickly. And then I am anticipating lots of people asking me if I can make more. I can’t and I won’t. If I make more than 100 then it gets stressful; it becomes something different. Plus I’m in grad school & education.

Ah, but Travis, why don’t you just wait until you’re not in grad school to produce this? Well, then I have to wait until summer. And since this isn’t my primary or secondary source of income, I don’t NEED to make tons of money off the campaign. But what about people who miss it?

Cool, there are print & play options if you do. Don’t want to do that? I might even share the files on drivethrucards so you can order your own copy. I don’t mind. I know not everyone likes to P&P things, and that’s okay. But I won’t make more than intended.

All that to say, I’m doing this to try something new and different. If you can’t see beyond the need to accumulate more, I can’t help you. All sorts of other entertainment companies do this all of the time: LPs, special edition novels, etc… Why can’t board games?

I know I might lose some folx and anger others, but I am (rather selfishly) making a thing I want to make and see how it goes. Hopefully, this will spark me being able to do this more with different products or even release this at a larger scale down the road. That’d be cool.

If you want mass availability, send me a publisher. Otherwise, I’d like to do what I’d like to do without the guilt of having to go bigger or create more. (I package all of this by hand, mind you.) Sorry if you don’t get a physical copy. Maybe this will take off & I can do more.

But for now, this is it. I don’t mean to come across as forceful, but I need to make sure I’m taken care of first with a quirky, little project before jumping in deep.
