Yeah, free API is being abused badly right now by bot scammers & opinion manipulators. There’s no verification process or cost, so easy to spin up 100k bots to do bad things. Just ~$100/month for API access with ID verification will clean things up greatly.

I made a list of some Twitter users who have jumped on the “lock your account to increase your visibility” bandwagon, and guess what, they’re mostly right-wing dipshits gist.github.com/travisbrown/96

wants to clear this up, he could publish numbers, but he hasn’t, and he probably won’t, for reasons that I think are easy to guess.

To be clear: 269k is how many current subscribers we’ve identified, not an estimate of the total number. In the first round we found ~95% of the total with this approach (according to info from an internal source), so I’d guess not much more than 300k.

I know it doesn’t really matter whether a fascist billionaire is competent or not, but it’s still very satisfying to watch this one fuck up yet another of his pet projects this badly.

Just checked in on what my Twitter Blue tracker turned up this week and it’s going about as well as you’d expect (even more churn, even less growth):

To the people saying “but I follow hate accounts to track them”: 1) your follow is amplifying the account, and 2) if your ability to monitor an account depends on them not blocking you, at the very least that’s likely to skew whatever research you’re trying to do.

I feel like we need more open, community-driven ways to track (and target) companies and organizations who are still advertising here. If even a few dozen people were willing to submit anonymized data, we could probably start to build something useful.

Would anyone use a little browser extension that logs promoted tweets and allows you to save the data or submit it for aggregation?

It is immoral, dangerous, and highly destructive to our democracy for any advertiser to fund a platform that fuels hate speech, election denialism and conspiracy theories. Until actions are taken to make this a safe space, we call on companies to pause all advertising on Twitter.

I have some stuff running on the API and haven’t seen anything like this. Some endpoints are giving rate limit errors in the US when the rate limit hasn’t been violated, but are working as usual from Germany. A few 401s that don’t make sense. Just seems kind of randomly broken.
