For many trans people, getting gender affirming surgery can be literally life saving. But a complicated and quickly expanding system can sometimes leave patients feeling left behind when they feel a surgeon fails them.https://jezebel.com/when-surgeons-fail-their-trans-patients-1844774990?rev=1597854733082 …

I spoke with trans patients, multiple surgeons, a representative from WPATH, and several health care advocates over the course of parts of 2.5 years to bring this piece to life.https://jezebel.com/when-surgeons-fail-their-trans-patients-1844774990?rev=1597854733082 …

"Patients who seek [trans-affirmative surgeries] are locked in a devil’s bargain, unable to be assured of the quality of care when they sign on and unclear how to move forward when they’re unhappy with the results.”https://jezebel.com/when-surgeons-fail-their-trans-patients-1844774990 …

Several surgeons came up over the course of my investigation, including Dr. Kathy Rumer in Pennsylvania. I spoke with several of her patients who felt they didn’t get the quality care they were initially expecting and have struggled to find resolution.https://jezebel.com/when-surgeons-fail-their-trans-patients-1844774990 …

When I reached out to Dr. Rumer for comment, I heard back from attorney instead. https://jezebel.com/when-surgeons-fail-their-trans-patients-1844774990 …pic.twitter.com/nQSeg1nRbS

Part of the problem with the system is that there isn’t a specific professional board responsible for setting training standards, and medical board complaints can be difficult to substantiate. Alternatively, malpractice suits are expensive.https://jezebel.com/when-surgeons-fail-their-trans-patients-1844774990 …

At the same time, it’s difficult for trans people to talk about surgical difficulties. Already, anti-trans accounts in this site are using this piece to suggest trans people should not get this care instead of suggesting any reforms for surgeons.https://jezebel.com/when-surgeons-fail-their-trans-patients-1844774990 …

Only 3 days recovery in a hospital? Holy shit that is ridiculously irresponsible. For comparison, my GRS happened in two stages here in Germany, one with 13 days at the hospital (+ 2 weeks rest at home) and and one with 8 days at the hospital (+ 1 week at home)

TBH I’m amazed that she was able to get to a movie theater or sit at in a chair all after just 2 weeks.

Katelyn, that is a great assessment of the state of the art (and, if you ask me, it still is an art). So well written. In a lot of ways, I'm kind of glad my passage was in the dark ages, with a handful of practitioners. While hard to find, they were vetted. Mine was great.

7 days in hospital, 6 at nearby hotel before heading home, 3 weeks at home after, labiaplasty 3 months later as an outpatient procedure. No complaints.
