JUST IN: Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says in the past few days, we have averaged more than 3,500 new cases a day and our positivity rate has gone to more than 9 percent now. "To state the obvious, COVID-19 is now spreading at an unacceptable rate in Texas," Abbott says.
Governor asks that Texans wear masks. "Our goal is to keep Texans out of hospitals and to reduce the number of Texans who test positive...COVID hasn't simply gone away. We don't have to choose between jobs and health. We can have both."
Abbott: "Together, we will keep Texas wide open for business." State officials say we are a "crucial point in time."
Governor says he "remains flexible" with regard to the need to put new restrictions in place. "If those spikes continue, additional measures are going to be necessary," he says.
There's quite a few very small counties in that list, so thanks for sharing something with the base n instead of just %. Both MT counties have <10k people in them with the largest pop centers 1+ hrs away in a diff county. It'd be interesting to see top 50 with a pop min.
So it’s not a hoax then?
I don't think Abbott ever called it a hoax. He definitely pushed us to open too soon and didn't enforce stay-at-home orders the way he should have, but thankfully he's not like DeSantis or Kemp.
Someone should let him know that he is seeing the spread from 2 - 3 weeks ago, and any action today will take about 2 - 3 weeks to take effect. This is what gets lost in this pandemic.
