Quick 🧵on ableism So I wrote about a new prosthetic arm that 'feels' touch. Two amputees quoted in the story reported i) missing touch deeply and ii) loving the new tech because it freed him from the very painful prosthetic he used earlier, respectively.https://thecorrespondent.com/627/millions-are-forced-to-live-without-touch-but-technology-now-has-a-solution/83004815652-445cbef2 …

Near the ending, I described an emotional scene when one of them was able to touch again. I wrote that for the sake of people like him, finding prosthetics that "truly complete you" ought to become easy. A few readers of a Dutch translation of the piece found this offensive.+pic.twitter.com/D18G6rUE0f

They pointed out that living with disability has in fact made their lives richer, and that they don't feel 'incomplete'. As someone who has lived with a psychosocial disability, I've repeatedly said the same thing. But I'm also mindful that not everyone feels the same way.+

Technology like this can make the lives of some people infinitely better (the piece contains a detailed discussion on its high cost, which will severely limit it) while for others, they may seem like what @elizjackson calls ableist "disability dongles":+https://twitter.com/elizejackson/status/1110629818234818570?s=19 …

Disability Dongle: A well intended elegant, yet useless solution to a problem we never knew we had. Disability Dongles are most often conceived of and created in design schools and at IDEO.

In an earlier story, I'd interviewed people with locomotive disabilities to question ableist ideas of touch. And in my next piece, I'm referencing disability dongles too. That said, I agree with what one reader said in their critique of my current piece.+https://thecorrespondent.com/573/what-people-with-disabilities-want-us-to-know-about-touch/75856075548-733db63d …

In this piece, I should have repeated the dangers of ableist thinking, and included the crucial debate around what technology for people with disabilities is actually useful, and what is 'cool' but may not really help/be a reflection of ableist assumptions/fascination. +

And that technology is merely an aid. The real issues for people with disabilities are access, acceptance, dignity. Those are the things that 'complete' human beings. Not technology. I'm sorry I didn't. Thanks to the greatest readers in the world for pushing me to dig deeper.+

PS: While my readers generously engaged with me, I don't take their engagement for granted. I'm mindful that it isn't the job of people with disabilites to educate able-bodied people or serve as inspiration for them. 'Nuff said. Onwards 🙏🏿
