    What a great photo! is one of my favourite . Not many people know, but it is also a telescope hiding in plain sight (Robert Hooke had a laboratory in the basement and the structure was intended as a scientific tool as well as commemorative column

    Great man about whom I will continue the research started for and then . He presided over Glasgow's building trades at end 19th Century, so trying to find link to Mackintosh's Art Nouveau via use of steel, iron & standards.

    You can get up close to and touch (we encourage that) Sir William Arrol's amazing superstructure inside Tower Bridge.

    Sir William Arrol was born 1839. Thanks to his pioneering use of steel, his company built the new Tay Bridge, Forth Bridge, the Titan crane, Clydebank and the superstructure for Tower Bridge as well as many more Arrol structures which remain today.
