Normalisation, how to do it fast for the untyped lambda-calculus by means of evaluation, and why we care (together with some of the required type theory/PLT background): first of a series, hopefully. Feel free to yell at me in replies about mistakes etc!

I've been doing some CSS inspecting of some pretty looking sites, focusing on content width. Genuinely surprised nobody seems to use the char unit, e.g. `max-width: 80ch`? Instead everybody seems to use pixels/%. Why? Isn't the normal advise to aim for 50-80 chars per line?

My wife and I never talk baby talk to our kid. We enforce academic seminar norms and jargon. My child isn’t even 2 yet and can interrupt presenters on the first slide. Adults at family gatherings are shocked when my child asks a question that turns out to be more of a comment.

My wife and I never baby talk to our kids. We use full sentences and a wide vocabulary including complex words. My son is 3 and can carry a full conversation. Adults at family gatherings are shocked at his social aptitude. My daughter isn’t even 2 and she uses 4-syllable words.

For 2020 I'm doing a 1 C++ Best Practice per retweet thread! I wrote my first blog article about C++ best practices in 2007. In many ways I've been repeating myself over and over again for the last 13ish years. And very little of what I say is novel. Thread follows:

I was a freelance UX writer for >3 years and learned along the way that process (proposals, contracts, etc) were a big advantage. I'm not freelance anymore, but maybe I can help others in the same space. Here's the template I used for pitching my clients:

Fun tip: I often grab local versions of sites to experiment and learn from. You can get a site's html and all of the page's dependencies with a single wget command: wget -H -E -k -p SOMEURL And then as a bonus, deploy it right from the CLI!
