The winner of the chunky contest, weighing in at a whopping 4.4g! Her large gills are an adaptation to her pond habitat. If this newt ever metamorphoses she will skip the eft (juvenile) stage completely!

Reporting: 4 years ago we installed solar panels & sliced 25% off our electricity bill. Last Fall we installed a heat pump - another 25% The heat pump was lots cheaper than the solar panels, but they have another advantage: hottest part of the house is now cooler in summer

I was looking for individual birds when I noticed movement out of the corner of my eye. A small flock of Cattle Egrets originally out of camera range took off. I panned the camera with their flight path and captured them as they flew in front of me toward the setting sun.

My favourite tawny frogmouth is back in the tree next to my bedroom, lulling me to sleep with its soft, deep & continuous "oom, oom, oom." Notice its weak feet that don't have curved talons - different to owls. Love their scruffy, wide-mouthed face.

It had been recently raining when this Florida Red-shouldered Hawk flew to this perch. He had not completely dried yet as he started scanning the area of dinner. I think he knew lots of wildlife, both predators and prey, come out after a rain to catch up on eating.

My bah humbug take on is that many people don’t get the joke and now actually believe there is a biological or meteorological basis to the tradition. There is not.

Pleased to see a new review of Secrets of Snakes appear in Biological Conservation, “well-written, entertaining, and full of great information. There is something in the book for everyone from seasoned herpetologists to K-12 students.”
