I think a huge amount of the disconnect on the "how safe is Oakland" issue stems from people conflating car theft (which is sadly extremely prevalent EVERYWHERE in the Bay) with violent crime. The thing is, moving Genesis out of Oakland would NOT help with car crimes.

I'm trying to come at this from a place of good faith, and again I want to reiterate that homelessness and car crime are major Bay problems that the local leadership has failed to solve. But it's a way more nuanced issue than "Oakland is the problem"
I think moving the tournament out of the Bay Area is most likely not feasible considering cost and venue so I understand what you mean. A new venue in the same area doesn’t solve it. There should be a concerted effort to inform and educate rather than dismiss then
I 100% believe there is no easy answer to this but I think the discussion is worth having and dunking on people because they’re worried isn’t the right approach clearly.
I think people don’t want their car broken into period so if that area is a problem why are we constantly dismissing peoples cries about it? Next RARELY do I hear car break in happen ANYWHERE else. So is it truly everywhere problem for SMASH or that area specifically?
I don't think it's so much dismissing the car break-in issue as it is telling people to stop acting like it's an Oakland issue. If you move Genesis to various areas in the Bay, you're gonna have car break-in problems. You can also take some precautions to avoid car break-ins.
