    Being able to dose before I leave means not going out covered in cold sweat and feeling shaky. Making someone do daily observed doses is just cruel. Taking your medication before facing the world is very important to PTSD management. Reversing the process is disruptive.

    When I was homeless, I was denied housing bc I refused the mandatory 12-step meetings. I put together research showing the extremely high failure rate of these programs versus the success rate of medication and therapy, both of which I credit to helping me end my addiction.

    The reason I was considered “non-compliant” and my license was suspended for 5 years is because I asked for an alternative to mandatory 12-step meetings. 10 years later I still don’t have a nursing license because I asked for a tailored recovery plan.

    My deepest thoughts and sympathies are with the people in Newfoundland today who are unable to get their methadone/suboxone! Holy fuck. I can't imagine. I would lose my mind. 😥😥

    Addiction is an outmoded medical myth. It's much less value-laden and judgmental to say 'daily drug user' or 'regular drug user.'

    I can't imagine what might have befallen me if I hadn't successfully resisted their coercive behavior, not to mention the shaming and denigration. Putting someone recently traumatized and at imminent suicide risk "in recovery" is inviting disaster and profoundly immoral.

    I managed to avoid being sent to one by family. At the time, I'd just talked my way out of the psych ward before I was "safe." While I was being held in the hospital, they at least tried (inadequately) to treat my withdrawal, provided medical treatment. My therapist visited.

    Please read and rt this. Too many people believe that addictions "treatment" is something evidence-based and effective, or are unaware of what it entails, taking treatment centers' claims at face value.

    We often use the term "treatment" and many who use it and advocate for it have never been to an addiction tx facility as a patient. This is a long thread with some bullet points indicating what I did experience and what I did not experience over 32 treatment admissions. 1/22
