Same. And, for the record, I have personally seen Google products change due to internal activism from folks like @lizthegrey. Google is FULL of awesome people who push the company to do better every single day.https://twitter.com/mcmillen/status/975344037686337537 …

I muted P*nboard a while ago because he consistently criticizes individual Googlers for every thing Google’s management does. For someone who started a movement with “Solidarity” in the name, he sure doesn’t understand a damn thing about being supportive. https://twitter.com/lizthegrey/status/975245558297382912 …

But of course Googlers can't talk externally about this stuff. All I can say is: think of the stories you've heard about Google algorithms fucking up hugely, like categorizing YouTube videos with 'gay' in the title as porn, or labeling Black faces as apes.

You know those stories because the flawed algorithm went live and was discovered by the public. Now ask yourself, how many more times do you think Google *almost* released something equally horrific, but Googlers caught it and fixed it first?

So yes, a hell of a lot of Googlers devote a hell of a lot of time to making sure Google does the right thing, with its products and its policies and its workplace culture. And as @mcmillen says, Maciej just refuses to entertain the idea that that's true.

Last note: I used ML errors as examples because they're easy to see, but in EVERY area, Googlers push for products to benefit the public and keep people safe. More privacy and security (shout out to @tariqajyusuf), safer self driving cars -- heck, look up Project Loon.

I may have some beefs with my former employer, but I will not abide people claiming that Googlers don't do enough to make the world, and their company, better.

No, the defense is “Google has outsourced most of these functions to AI so they don’t have to employ human labor and it often screws up terribly”.

Things that have a potential to do great damage deserve to be tested and vetted to the point that failure is vanishingly rare. Imagine how outraged the public would be if Chevrolet patted itsel on the back for the Corvair and Cobalt by saying it doesn’t happen *that* often.

I'm not patting myself on the back. Google DOES need to better. The entire point of this thread is that the folks in Google who are advocating to make things better should be commended, not pilloried.
