Same. And, for the record, I have personally seen Google products change due to internal activism from folks like @lizthegrey. Google is FULL of awesome people who push the company to do better every single day.https://twitter.com/mcmillen/status/975344037686337537 …

So yes, a hell of a lot of Googlers devote a hell of a lot of time to making sure Google does the right thing, with its products and its policies and its workplace culture. And as
@mcmillen says, Maciej just refuses to entertain the idea that that's true.Show this thread -
Last note: I used ML errors as examples because they're easy to see, but in EVERY area, Googlers push for products to benefit the public and keep people safe. More privacy and security (shout out to
@tariqajyusuf), safer self driving cars -- heck, look up Project Loon.Show this thread -
I may have some beefs with my former employer, but I will not abide people claiming that Googlers don't do enough to make the world, and their company, better.

No, the defense is “Google has outsourced most of these functions to AI so they don’t have to employ human labor and it often screws up terribly”.

Things that have a potential to do great damage deserve to be tested and vetted to the point that failure is vanishingly rare. Imagine how outraged the public would be if Chevrolet patted itsel on the back for the Corvair and Cobalt by saying it doesn’t happen *that* often.
-
I'm not patting myself on the back. Google DOES need to better. The entire point of this thread is that the folks in Google who are advocating to make things better should be commended, not pilloried.

"Now ask yourself, how many more times do you think Google" HAS "released something equally horrific," but we may never know?
Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

I see where you're coming from, but I am neither a bridge engineer nor writing in defense of the bridge engineering company itself.
