  1. Trump says previous presidents have urged him to build the wall. Yea, I believe that. Andrew Jackson? Warren Harding? Rutherford Hayes?

Spare me Mitt Romney. To be better than Trump is a very low bar and Romney has sucked up to him when it counted. I’m betting he will do it again if it serves his self-interest.

What we're seeing around the shutdown and the wall is that Trump has zero negotiating skills -- in part because he is a pathological liar and in part because he is guided not by a good mind but by rogue impulses that he can't control.

There is something called healthy shame. It’s the feeling we are meant to have when we transgress — or better yet, the anticipatory feeling that prevents our bad behavior. Trump has no shame — his most frightening deficit.

An American disease: powerful people caught behaving badly but unable to apologize. Latest is Louis CK. Just shut up. You caused your own downfall by abusing your power. You are surely not a victim.

Good morning Donald Trump and welcome to the worst year of your life. Karma always gets you in the end.

Trump will not survive as president through 2019. This I believe.

Trump's tweets today feel especially desperate and pathetic. It is New Year's Day. He hasn't communicated one hopeful message. He gets smaller every day.

  9. Amid the parade of horribles Trump is inflicting — including depriving 800,000 Americans of a paycheck for no reason — the worst is his systematic destruction of the environment. Along with complicit Republicans, he is literally poisoning the world we’re meant to protect.

  10. The more he sees he is playing a losing hand, the more Trump ups the ante. You can feel his desperation about the corner he has pushed himself into around the wall. Losing makes him even more crazy than usual.

  11. The problem with Trump’s moves in Syria and Afghanistan is that he acted on an impulse. He is incapable of thinking in a nuanced and reflective way about anything and simply believes he knows best. The only certainty, in a fiercely complex world, is that he does not.

  12. It is easy to behave badly. Just follow your most selfish instincts. It is difficult and courageous to behave well, because it so often involves self-sacrifice and delayed gratification.

  14. Of course, Trump lied about the "bone spurs" that got him out of serving in Vietnam. As we know, he lies about everything. Add it to the list.

  15. To George Conway: Make this a meaningful Christmas Day. Help your Deeply complicit wife finally renounce the man she has dishonestly defended and enabled for more than two years — to the world’s detriment.

  17. The tide has turned. Expect that every move Trump makes will be another self inflicted wound. It will be death by a thousand cuts and his bleeding will not stop, as ours has not for the past two painful years.

  18. Trump took credit for the rise of the stock market. Now he must accept responsibility for the drop. He deserves both. The rise was based on an illusion he created with a misguided tax cut. The drop is a return to reality.

  19. One of the casualties of the past two years is belief in goodness. We are capable of so much more than we realize, but virtue requires the courage to sacrifice our short term self interest. May the nightmare we’re enduring be a lesson that fuels human evolution.
