1/14 Why does E. coli clear from the blood faster than S. aureus? I've heard this repeatedly but never fully understood the difference. One answer helps explain why cirrhosis is a risk factor for infection and introduced me to a Trojan horse of the immune system. Read on!

It appears that the MPS deals with S. aureus and E. coli in slightly different ways.

I would pick a bone with this study. It does not say that staph is rarer in neutropenia. Just that it's a smaller proortion. I would interpret that as an increase in GNR reducing the relative, but not absolute amount of staph infections.

Great point, also made by
@roby_bhatt. Here is another study which found that neutropenic patients had shorter durations of S. aureus bacteremia and lower rates of metastatic infection. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12935981 pic.twitter.com/o4CvFiQjM6

This is a great thread! But this particular finding is almost certainly due to higher rates of GNR bacteremia in neutropenia (denominator is all bacteremias, not all patients at risk), rather than any sort of protection against S aureus from lack of Trojan horse.
