I think democracy is largely to blame for the hatred. Democracy turns people against each other by putting them in competition with one another in order to obtain power. Remove the right to vote and most of the unpleasantness would go away.
We live in a very sarcastic and ironic society. This is due to the decline of physical violence. We are bundles of unexpressed anger and hate. It comes out sideways. A great deal of the modern sitcom corrals this anger into exaggerated sarcasm.
