Robert Louis Stevenson invented the tax haven. Long John Silver was a shrewed businessman (owns a pub + good with money, unlike other buccaneers) looking to avoid tax.
Treasure Island and the Caribbean...what is it about burying treasure on these islands? Even now, these tax havens contain hidden booty...Virgin Islands etc. There is no particular reason why (anywhere could be a tax haven)—except literature.

Long John Silver got away with it, you know. He is the true hero of Treasure Island. Everyone—even the saintly doctor— attests to his honesty and intelligence. And he is the only character you really remember. The others fade.
