Unintentional heroes: the villains in all popular films over the last 50 years or so represent reactionary values. For reactionaries to have heroes, they need only cheer for the villains. This explains why many on the hard right see themselves as “evil”.
The X-Men and Superman represent the forces of liberal integrationism and equality coutnerposed to nationalism, ethnocentrism, and so on. These forms are propaganda for the American ideal, a part of the Americanisation of the world.

But the mere existence of these forms allows them to be subverted, for people may identify with the “villain”. The comic form and popular action movie merely propagandise for the current dispensation...listen to the villains...what if the “villains”...have a point.
