2. It’s quality that counts, not mere body numbers. In truth, Birmingham is the UK’s most American city (followed by Milton Keynes). It is our Motown, almost completely constructed for the automobile and dedicated to mall-like shopping.

3. The suburbs were among the first in the UK to be constructed with garages as standard. The car was expected. This is also why Birmingham is commercial and thinks only in terms of stats and quantity in comparison to London—a city like Manchester has a strong soul.

4. But Birmingham is exciting, especially in Ballardian terms. You can imagine yourself in a JG Ballard novel walking around there. There are also quirks, such as the Victorian water towers that inspired Tolkein’s two towers.
