What a lot of rationalist types seem to want is a castrated version of parrhesia. They're terrified of conflict so they want to deface the coinage without defacing the coinage.
Interestingly, Diogenes of Sinope (Diogenes the Cynic) started off in banking and was caught adulterating currency. The Oracle at Delphi then advised him to “debase the currency”, which he took to mean: challenge all customs (essentially through radical truth telling).
