1. Absolute paranoia thread: This incident occurred in a class organised by a prof who is known for his activism (wiki) & is also involved w/ the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. A psychology professor at the University of Toronto. 2. I know another famous Univerity of Toronto psychology professor (Peterson, pictured) who has upset lots of people. Look at how the Toronto Sun reports this, it could be Peterson—if you only know of one vaguely famous psych prof from Toronto (how many could there be?).pic.twitter.com/Skb83pYpKP

3. Here’s a link to the Toronto Sun’s very vague report that makes it look like this event happened to Peterson (https://torontosun.com/news/local-news/u-of-ts-porn-prof-given-hard-time-over-sexxx-rated-lecture …) Notice that the prof who is responsible “Steve Joordens” has name awfully like Jordan Peterson, enough for the mind to be tricked.

See, I *want* to believe that no one would fall for something as dumb... But a part of me cannot help but suspect you are right.

1. It’s not that people fall for it consciously. The idea is that a busy person who just vaguely knows of Peterson (most people) will Scan the article and make the connection almost sub-conciously. It’s about building a buzz. Someone at a work will mention JBP...

2. ...and the casual reader will say, “Hey, isn’t he that gay porn guy.” Everyone will get confused, & nobody will really check (who cares). It’s how a rumour starts. I used to work as a journalist, and, although a journalist working on, say, a magazine about model railways...pic.twitter.com/dquvtdH6JM

3. ...is probably basically fine, the majority of journalists—especially, especially tabloid journalists—would sell their grandmother to be eaten by hyenas. This is exactly the sort of thing they’d do, or willingly be fed by someone else.

4. They enjoy it (insinuation, smear, making up quotes etc.), and it’s part of the reason so many of them are alcoholics/drug users. It’s all the lies they have to tell. It makes them miserable.

I am quite aware of how depraved the profession is. My dear mother studied journalism at uni & was one in the 90s; she quit because she would not debase her writings to the ‘industry standard’. They’ve always been like that, it seems.

I think some people get caught up in hating journalists, because they concentrate on tabloids or general news orgs. Someone writing about model railways or knitting is not likely to be too bad—although there is a common thread. My thoughts:https://medium.com/@TXHart/confessions-of-a-crap-journalist-88751cd48e01 …
