“Triste est omne animal post coitum, praeter mulierem gallumque“ @nastyinmuhtaxi, is the last part a pun on “cock”/“penis” or was that not current slang at the time? Does it literally mean the rooster/cock and the woman?

Gallus literally means cock/rooster, I don't really think it's a pun, it sounds like some of the outrageous claims on natural science you find in Pliny... "all goats except the brown ones die if they see their reflection in water"

I was sceptical, since it seemed unlikely to me that a slang term would carry across languages and time in that way—though stranger things have happened. It’s just that, as you say, excepting the rooster (woman understandable) is an odd claim.
