1. Notes on alternative history: We like to imagine worlds where the Nazis won WWII or the Communists won the Cold War because these regimes seem exotic and exciting to us. But if these regimes really won nothing would change on the most fundamental level.

2. In one scenario, we would have “Gulag Memorial Day” instead of Holocaust Memorial Day and television would show the atrocities in the Gulag, and organisations would hunt down “the last NKVD officers”.

3. In the Communist scenario, we would have huge, compulsory May Day parades down Whitehall celebrating the Levellers, the Tolpuddle Martyrs, & Harry Pollitt etc.

4. But, at the deepest level, you wouldn’t know any different. This would all just be “normal” to you—as our current regime is normal to you. You would still be worried with the minutiae of life: washing up, arguing with the spouse, & office work.

5. It’s only from our perspective that a Nazi or Communist alternative history looks exciting, but in reality it would be mundane in the same way.
