3 Steps to Millennial Financial Success:
1. Borrow $100K+ in student loans ; pay debt through your 40s
2. Move out to “the ciiiiiity
” and rent an apartment because your parents won’t let you decorate with empty vodka bottles
3. Spend remaining money on concert tickets

it’s literally that easy to become a billionaire if you do all this and “make an app”

People IRL keep telling me their personal financial information like how much they make, how much they have saved, how much their student loan payments are, etc. I just have to listen, tell them they’ll “get there” & “they’re still young” when I know they’re irreparably fucked.

I know one guy in the office has $7 left until his next paycheck, another has to pay $600/mo student loan debt, another has $10K+ credit card debt, etc. I don’t know why people tell me this.

They expect you to share a similar tale of woe and join in mutual commiseration about how bad the situation is...then find a scapegoat for your circumstances. Secretly, they want to be told they’re irresponsible and foolish, but no one tells the truth so that will not happen.

Secretly they want to be told they have been irresponsible, but that there's something they can do. Even if that's the case, they suddenly discover they really hate being told what to do (or something) halfway through and shoot the messenger.

On the plus side this makes them stop sharing financial details with you. On the minus they usually get comprehensively spiteful.

So what they want is something like: to be told they're irresponsible, and then be forced to continue listening to it because you're actually their father/baron, then be forgiven so that they can actually make it out.

True. There’s hunger for a father-confessor. Nobody likes to hear an honest view, esp from someone they secretly think is their inferior. People are tied in so many knots of self-deception through family, education, & work that they react to honesty w/ anger—even if they want it.
