1. James Bond was a means of preserving a sense of British power in the postwar world through the illusion that our secret service was powerful. Ironically, MI6 was heavily subverted by the Soviets. MI5 was somewhat better.

3. Rather like TE Lawrence, Bond is a figure of individuality who has a tremendous capacity to inflict and take pain. However, I’m not convinced this is sadism or masochism since he doesn’t take pleasure in it...so far as I recall.
