2. Bond is actually a very Second World War character. The machines and boffins that surround him are of the Second World War, and of Fleming’s experience of that era’s boffins and gadgets. Bond has never adapted well to the digital age for this reason.

3. Rather like TE Lawrence, Bond is a figure of individuality who has a tremendous capacity to inflict and take pain. However, I’m not convinced this is sadism or masochism since he doesn’t take pleasure in it...so far as I recall.
