Quite a lot of people in the West, particularly of the engineering sort, are open to the idea that China’s technocratic path is superior in an NRx type way. However, these people also tend to believe that the technocrats of the EU are the same as China’s technocrats. Wrong.

Do NRx people actually think that about EU technocrats? I assumed most could easily see them as the isomorphic equivalent of the present US coastal elites (most if not all NRx writers I’ve read are American).

To clarify, I’m not talking about actual NRx people. I’m talking about engineering-type people I’ve known who, years before NRx was “a thing”, said things like, “We should be run by engineers like China.” These people also, in my experience, tend to be pro-EU out of confusion.

To be fair, the pure engineering, ‘human calculator’ types can be incredibly obtuse on ideological matters. I think they just go through uni & professional like with the mindset that politics isn’t their business. Yet the Trotsky dictum still holds...

I used to think that, but then I realised it was my own snobbery. In reality, they see the situation most clearly and without the distortion of ideology. From Arafat to Thatcher, engineers make excellent leaders. They combine mathematical precision with practicality.
