1. After years of being suspicious of the Epicureans & favouring the Stoics, I begin to realise that their position is sensible. The Stoic position, while it has useful tricks, is too much for masochists, people making a virtue of necessity, or those cultivating ressentiment.

2. “Better to be spat at than to do the honourable thing though it causes you displeasure,” Epicurus said something like this. He was right. The man who steels himself to suffer for “honour”, especially in modernity is a fool—Ignatius in “A Confederacy of Dunces”.
