1. It finally strikes me that it’s pointless to have children or to get married. All the women in my social class earn more than me, or have been so hopelessly damaged by abortion & multiple relationships (usually both) that it’s a useless enterprise.

Yes. Any man can have much of his worldviews altered by cohabitation. It's not about competence or skill, it's about trust. It's easier to put faith in a man who understands as many of your struggles as possible

But the man who stands outside might be objective...
-
The man who can stand inside and out is "more" "objective"
-
Yes, but with relationships once you’re in there’s a sense in which you can’t get out.
-
Ehhhhhh that's true in a lot of cases, I suppose. Especially marriage. Still think that makes Joyce's point all the more reasonable.
-
I’m quite mystical about this. I think “bits” of people become completely entangled with you & you form a psychic connection with them. I have no rational evidence for this belief. Could you explain how you interpret this Joyce? Maybe I’m not getting it.
-
Agreed on the entanglement, we adopt mannerisms from family/friends all the time. My laugh is a progeny of various relatives & comics, my eyebrow raise I subconsciously stole from an ex-girlfriend, etc. There's evidence all over the place supporting this. I find it a good thing

Joyce's take on Christ was somewhat complex. He rebelled against early 20th century Irish Nationalism and the parliamentary protestantism of Charles Parnell. Joyce always thought himself as an exile who needed to create a new soul/race/nation/spirit, whatever word you want to use
