2. d. Darwin knocked out the natural history side of it. Genetics accelerated this. What’s left is, at best, the Taleb, Jung & Peterson approach. Taleb says religion encodes useful nowledge. Jung & Peterson say it’s psychologically true, i.e. ....
I think the New Testatment is mostly about this. Jesus comes as a force against law (the Pharisees & Rome) and for something higher, which seems to me to be redemption found in truth & love. Speaking this is the highest good, and higher than religious law or the laws of state.

It’s embodied in the Christian motto: “Cor ad cor loquitur”. This is literally about having a heart-to-heart with God. The love of God arises from speaking sincerely and truthfully with Him.

And the question why Christianity’s ideals were able to take root remains. Already there in some sense?
-
1. I don’t know. One answer is that the Roman Empire was degrading & that people start to believe in religions like Christianity when a civilisation fails. Socialism & liberalism would be analogous beliefs in the contemporary West.
-
2. As with all religions and systems, you can see elements within other systems and religions (e.g. Judaism in Islam or the influence of Stoicism in Christianity). However, the religion or system as a piece is still unique, other influences notwitstanding.

This is more like the detail I’m looking for, but it does raise the possibility that “prioritising love” would be a fairer description of the religion.
-
Christians emphasise the love aspect, perhaps for propaganda purposes. This always makes them slightly sinister, since humans are so unlovely that anyone who says “I love you” is horrifying to us, because it can’t be so. Love requires living in truth is the answer.
-
Yes. If I say “prioritising love” is the Christian ideal, I do not thereby imply that it is practised by Christians, practicable by anyone, or desirable.
