The human capacity for spontaneous self-organisation lies behind many “conspiracy theories”. What seems like a centrally coordinated action by some shadowy committee is merely what humans look like using their self-interested reason and social intuition.https://twitter.com/jordanbpeterson/status/1022670950159011840 …

The scale of these ”torrents” of abuse is also often exaggerated. After the Peterson interview I checked the responses Newman was getting. Plenty of criticisms but 1000s of _abusive_ tweets never happened.

1. Women perceive criticism differently to men. I worked with female journalists who would be upset for months over one very mildly critical comment on an article. I imagine Newman received some quite strong attacks (even for a man). It probably felt like 1000s.

That’s true although with plenty of individual variation. It’s ironic if Newman really is that sensitive given how combative she came off as at least in that interview.

Go for a woman’s looks, as I bet many of these trolls did, & they’ll go to pieces. She can be combative, but her interlocutors are playing to strict middle class/media rules. She can be that aggressive bc they talk to her to preserve their image. Internet trolls, 0 rules.
