1. In Britain, this was what the alternative comedy became. It began as a reaction to Thatcher, partly because people were at a loose end due to state funded “art” being cut back. Stewert Lee is one liberal stand up “preacher” produced by this wave.

2. Humanists likes AC Grayling and Alain de Botton sometimes call for a secular Sunday service, but this is what comedy—what was called “alternative” comedy—actually is for most secular types. It’s strongly moralistic: see also, Bill Hicks.
