What gives “consent” its moral quiddity, anyway? It seems to me a concept that is belaboured precisely because it is ambiguous and can be subject to all sorts of interpretations and twisting subject to the interests involved.

Answer: “consent” has become important in sexual matters because Chesterton’s fence has been removed. This was all dealt with when sex outside marriage was wrong, and marriage was taken to mean unlimited sexual access for the man. “Free love” opened the door to endless confusion.
