1. On a pedantic note, she was Ukrainian. The use of English on protests is, I presume, directed to the US. It’s also directed to the world, since most educated people speak English. It signals status as well as getting your message out.

2. Educated people abroad (wherever they are abroad) will only speak English as a matter of course in my experience—as they spoke French in the 18thC.
