Western teenage rebellion is a very modern phenomenon. Most teens and young adults from the early 20th century would have more in common with Asians today

Commodified rebellion, yes. The “teenager” was invented in the 1950s, a product of surplus income and increased education. But the tradition of adolescent separation & rebellion is old: Romeo & Juliet, Sorrows of Young Werhter etc.
