I don’t mean this with any hostility. It just seems to be how women are by nature, and I think it serves a useful purpose. It just becomes seriously pernicious in societies where divorce is easy. It’s quite a perverse conclusion, although it does seem to be true and obvious (now)

True. However, people see what they want to see. Most people know their partner is having an affair, but they shield it from themselves. In the same way, you can say “that’s just a character”. Also, in modernity there is immense pressure to think, “It was different in the past.”
