Humans associate those things they value most with the religion they share with their ingroup. Translating beauty into ingroup language for status points is a priestly skill.

That is true. Carl Sagan was a priest. My grandparents had his book, and even though they went to church they still basically believed his credo, “We are cosmic dust and to cosmic dust we will return.” It’s not a bad credo, and it has some truth. But there is more.

The west has had an increasingly amorphous religion over the last few generations, but religions are at their best when they territorialize gently and firmly. Whatever comes next will have borders, or will be entropy.

I vaguely think Scientology is the religion with the greatest future in the West. It’s highly concentrated,hierarchical, and amenable to technology. It was created with the atomic age. It is, as all religions are at first, a little eccentric. But it could mature.
