You steer your life, but you don't create your identity ex nihilo nor arbitrarily construct it. If the opposite were the case, I could decide I was an elephant and others would treat me accordingly rather than treat me as the insane person I would be.

I think there is a point, a brief span in our lives when we are more consciously creating an identity, and then 99% we just apply minor corrections, even if we come to recognise that we crafted the wrong one. Usually c14-25 years old? Maybe even narrower.
