1. The poetry of d’Annunzio is very focussed on external description, and insofar as he moves beyond feelings this makes it redundant. The camera, television, and cinema made this kind of descriptive writing redundant.

2. As JG Ballard observed, we are surrounded by the story made by media & advertising. The only place to go, the only place to be free, is our interior. We have to retreat into our own minds to find anything real. Accordingly, this is where poetry & writing went.

3. And it’s why poetry and writing remain relevant, although the novel is no longer the “queen of the arts”. These are the only means we have to explore our interior experience. We’ll never put a video camera in the mind. But it does mean that older literature is alien to us.

4. Exploring the interior also puts a person in touch with the archetypes and forces of the unconscious. Going inwards brings a person closer to a deeper kind of truth.
