Doctors make for good writers: Chekhov, Céline, Conan Doyle, Maugham, JG Ballard, Burroughs (trained slightly), Lem. They are trained to look at humans in a detached way, which allows them to reconstruct human experience in their writing, also trained to observe.
Louis-Ferdinand Céline, despite being a complete arsehole in much of his writing, had a reputation for being a very kind doctor with his patients.
