I believe we will discover over next 10-20 yrs that autism is a much broader family of disorders than previously thought, united only by a tendency to draw inward, away from industrial society. It will take a great deal of careful study to tease apart causes and proper treatments

You're right that colloquial use as an insult confuses matters a great deal. I favor a narrower interpretation of autism, and oppose its normalization. People with autism are human beings worthy of respect, but their behavior isn't "just different"-it's disordered.
