Notes on using social media: 1/ My unconventional engagement with social media derives from an experiment in honesty I’ve been undertaking for the past 2yrs where I say what I think and feel, thereby cutting out a lot of irony and indirect humour—but also cutting out manipulation

/ That’s a consequence of a type of honesty, which can be quite profound or quite funny. I don’t follow anyone and only quote retweet because I want to use the platform differently and see if it opens up new space and different ways to engage, different ways to think online.

/ There’s no “purpose” to why I’m here. I’d carry on the same with 5 or 50k followers. By being open, you get the chance to look foolish (or wise), but you also get more opportunities for movement. This is valuable. Patterns repeat or reiterate at higher levels.

/ Paraphrasing books I’m reading changes how I perceive the book. I come back to the text at new level. Other people online may want to convince you of something: they have a political case, a sales pitch (for consumer goods or a mental illness). I don’t have an objective.

/ These are just words on a screen. It’s not me, and what I wrote five minutes ago isn’t what I necessarily think or feel now. People are too in love with words on a screen. But that’s just a dream. And so is the world beyond the screen.
