The weakness of Terence McKenna’s approach is evident when his brother describes an element of his own project: marrying chemical research with the work of Carlos Castaneda. Castaneda was meant to provide their ethnological basis or inspiration for the work.

The problem is that Castaneda was a fraud. Now, he did understand human psychology and conciousness very well—that’s how he managed to found a sex cult. So his books wok metaphorically, but if you treat the “Yaqui way of knowing” as actual ethnology you’re in trouble.
