2/ What he doesn’t realise is that the “left” he belongs to is in fact the hegemonic ideology of the West. He is puzzled as to why his fellow M-L leftists use the language of floods and swamps, but he doesn’t not understand the nationalism & rootedness inherent in M-L thought.

3/ In other words, his “left” has less in common with the M-Ls than the M-Ls have with the far right. As with most intellectuals in the West, Theweleit believes he is in leftist opposition to “the system” when he is actually part of the system—hence his bewilderment.
