Russell Brand just needs to learn, as per a self-help book I once read, “the biggest ego trip going is pretending not to have an ego.” If you want to help people & get pleasure from that, do it. Don’t go round pretending to help if you don’t enjoy it to “conquer” your ego.

Because, ultimately, he’s a celebrity a comedian. And even when he is preaching AA, “empathy”, helping, & all the rest...he’s still doing exactly what he did before, being the centre of attention & getting laughs, except I think he’s pretending he enjoys “saintly” behaviour more.

Personally, I get the impression he still rather loves all the drugs, drink, and women—despite claiming it’s all “so shallow”. Perhaps he’s cheating himself of an early death, a blaze of glory, by “reforming”. Anyway, his ego is there whatever.
