These exist at a low enough price that, even if things get bad, people won’t do anything. The “Great Recession” made people precarious but nobody felt real pain as per the Great Depression. As Roger Scruton observed, it would take a major war to excavate us.

Even during a substantial collapse, I think things like video games and tv and drugs would keep going. It’s enough to keep most people distracted and away from thinking long enough to challenge the system. Removes any immediate discomfort.

The agony and ecstasy needed to create beauty will vanish. Western societies will collapse altogether, but people will carry on drooling into their shirts. Nothing will change.

An elite requires legitimacy, you may well be right that social atomization and technological solutions will hold up the system, not quite convinced.
