1/Against “traditional” families: The right sometimes lionises imagined “traditional” families as perfect as opposed to atomised Western modernity. I disagree. The clannish type families of Pakistan or Jordan certainly have intimacy & bonds more powerful than Western atomisation.

3/ This is why the flip side of a close family is—like the Italian mafia—bloody feuding. People from these societies literally end up shooting each other, partly because their financial affairs and bloodlines are so intertangled.

4/ Westerners don’t really have families anymore, it’s mainly complete atomisation. This is lonely and isolating, but the advantage is that you’re not roped into a good feud against your uncles or cousins.
